The power of Holy Week is a truth too profound to be captured by human language, intended rather to be experienced with the heart. This Easter reflection explores why our best attempts at poetry fail to capture the essence of the risen Christ, and how this inadequacy can lead us to a deeper, child-like faith.

Embracing the Mystery of Holy Week

Passover.  When God passed over sinners and took the punishment Himself, eternally breaking the hold of death when He rose.

A poem would seem appropriate for such profound events, for if Christ’s sacrifice and resurrection aren’t spoken of and remembered, what else matters at all?  Yet what is poetry?  Metaphor and imagery, to elevate the ordinary beyond its worth?

Any comparison to Jesus’ passion would only undermine what He suffered, carrying the filth of all humanity from all time.  Any symbol of His resurrection would underrepresent the power manifested when He defied the tomb, like trying to capture the sun in a glass jar as though it were firefly, so we could imagine comprehension.  Foolishness it would be, to pretend we understand.

Graves opened when He died.  No further explanation given.  Matthew 27:52-53

What need have the strong for a doctor, and what need have we for a god whose ways are known to us?   The mysteries of the universe: the power of Jesus’ death and resurrection and our atonement lie safely in the hands of a loving God who makes wise the simple and whose kingdom is made up of those who become like little children.  Matthew 18:2-4

Even so, come, Lord Jesus.
