Hugla Hugh
This poem came to me one night as I was getting ready for bed. For some reason, the name Hugla Hugh popped into my head, and it made me curious enough to figure out what her story was.
I’ve added a bonus stanza at the end that’s technically been cut, but I decided to post it in case someone’s sense of humour is cynical enough that they appreciate it. If you live with toddlers, maybe you can relate. 🙂
They meant to name her Helga,
But they spelled it Hugla Hugh.
Except she wasn’t huggy, so
They didn’t know what to do!
She’d give them pleasant kisses,
She’d smile and she’d shrug,
But no matter what they tried, she simply
Wouldn’t give a hug!
They cooked her favourite dinner
With her favourite dessert,
She pecked her mommy’s cheek and
Ate until her tummy hurt.
They took her to a waterpark,
A birthday- girl surprise.
But Hugla wouldn’t hug them,
Though excitement lit her eyes.
They bought her all the presents that
She scribbled on her list.
But still, her parents got no hugs-
Like usual, they were kissed.
Until one night at bedtime, when
The Hughs had had enough.
They said, “That’s it, you’re Helga!
No more Hugla huggy stuff!”
Then out of bed hopped Helga,
She began to dance and cheer,
“My whole entire life, those are the
Words I’ve wished to hear!”
She landed in her Daddy’s lap
And wrapped him in a hug.
Her Mommy got the next one.
“Finally, my cuddle- bug!”
Her Daddy was astounded.
Her Mommy was aghast.
For the night they called her Helga,
She hugged them both at last!
But then, without the fuss that Helga
Never thought she’d miss,
Her life was kind of dull, so now
She’ll never give a kiss!
